When it comes to frugal crafting, I like to repurpose regular household trash into new craft projects. One of the items I like to use are empty baby food jars. These little jars can be repurposed into many different types of craft projects.

You can paint them or leave them plain. One of my quick and easy ways of decorating them is to just glue 1/4" wide ribbon around the lids rim and then glue a powder puff or fabric pillow on top. You can accent your powder puff with a satin ribbon bow or leave it plain.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Bath Salt Containers (fill with your favorite homemade bath salts)
2. Bubble Bath and Bath Oils

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find a baby mobile arm for craft project?
I'm looking for a plastic mobile arm for a craft project. It should be a standard, plastic, 4 or 5 arm mobile base - much like this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Infant-Stim-Mobile-Wimmer-Ferguson/dp/B00000K3QH/ref=pd_sbs_ba_11

I'm not looking for any actual decorations on it, just the plastic base. Any ideas? I want to buy them in bulk, so buying a ready made mobile and then modifying it wont work for me.

My son has a small wind up mobile above his crib. It only plays for 2-3 minutes at a time. I'd like to figure out how to modify it so that I can add batteries or plug it into the wall. Would a hobby or craft store have a kit to do this? Any Engineers out there know how I could modify this?

Baby nursery, Winnie the Pooh theme, looking for creative ideas
so far we've decided to go with red-shirt pooh, rather than the classic pooh
and we've decided to use a neutral color scheme, particularly light green

but besides buying the "Winnie the Pooh" line of baby items that everyone else has (crib, bedding, mobile, lamp, diaper stacker, etc...) we just don't have many creative ideas to make this nursery our-own (one-of-a-kind)

we've talked about getting a stuffed-animal hammock for the corner and using it to hold all the stuffed-animal Winnie the Pooh characters from our childhood (Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Gopher, Rabbit, Owl, etc...)

we've also talked about painting some empty flower pots with the word "hunny" on the side and use them to hold little things like diaper creams and pacifiers, any little knick-knacks that baby needs handy

as far as the walls go, we decided to frame finished mosaic style jig-saw puzzles of Pooh and Tigger rather than paint (since we rent) or hang the same old framed posters you see in all the nurseries

We're really at a loss here,
we want this nursery to be fun and playful, something the whole budding family can enjoy...can anyone offer any unique or creative ideas for decor? Specifically any Winnie the Pooh craft ideas, we are crafty people who would very much enjoy making something one-of-a-kind for our baby's room.
We'd appreciate links to any sites with ideas as well. Thanks for any shared ideas!

    • ANSWER:
Make some stuffed balloons out of fabric and hang them from the ceiling. With Pooh and Piglet hanging from them. Frame famous Pooh quotes and hang them on the wall. Use beehive baskets, little stuffed bees and balloons as sub decor. You can add a Winnie the Pooh mural to the room by painting a scene on an armoire, a dresser or a folding screen. Add some Winnie the Pooh Books to the room. Decoupage pictures of the Characters onto wooden blocks, you can get plain ones at craft stores. Buy a basic lamp and glue some stuffed characters onto the bottom of it. Hang a little yellow rain hat and jacket from a hook on the wall. This would be cute hanging from a shelf with little coat pegs under it. You can probably buy a set at Build a Bear or craft stores. Display the characters throughout the room rather than in one location. Shelves are the best for this. Take a picture of your baby in a Winnie the Pooh outfit and display it in the room. As he/she gets older make a shadow box with the outfit and picture of him/her in the outfit in the shadow box. And use it as decor.

Im very creative and I love making things from wall ornaments to blankets and decorations. Please give me ideas! Maybe ideas of what to do for a baby mobile? thanks!

  8. QUESTION:
    Switching rooms at day care...experiences?
The administrator at my 13-month-old daughter's day care suggested today that she move from the infant room to the toddler room. She's walking well now and is ready to be in a place that promotes her new skills - the infant room, of course, only has a small area for the babies who are mobile. On one hand I'm excited that she'll get to start participating in new activities...they do blocks, ABC's and counting, coloring and crafts. On the other hand, I'm a little nervous...we've had a rough time since she started there five months ago with her being sick (if you happened to see my questions posted here last month, you know she was even hospitalized for a rota virus infection). I'm worried she's going to be bombarded with a whole new set of bugs, and we'll be in the pediatrician's office every other day again. Did you find this was the case when your children changed areas, or did the transition go more smoothly than you expected?

Also, she's only at the day care two times a week max, for three and a half hours a day. Some weeks, depending on the availability of family and baby sitters, she doesn't even attend. My husband and I have done everything we can to keep her out of day care as much as possible. We were forced to enroll her last year due to an unforeseen family medical issue. The daycare will transition her to the new room...an hour a day to start, and work up gradually from there. They did ask for our approval and consent.

    Thanks in advance.
Thanks! I reposted this over in Toddler/Preschool and got some answers, but this one is great as well!

    • ANSWER:
I used to be a day care teacher for one- year- olds and did so for over 10 years. That is an excellent way of transitioning infants to the toddler classroom....an hour a day to start and slowly build up. That is a sign of a good day care. I did not find that the toddlers new to our classroom came down with any NEW viruses all of a sudden. Did they still get sick? Yes, a lot, but not any more than when they were in the infant room. By around 2 years old, they started not getting sick quite as often because the children were not mouthing toys as much anymore. However, until then, it was pretty much constant colds, flus, fevers, etc. no matter how much we disinfected everything. That is one of the not so good things about day care I am afraid. However, your daughter will love the new activities and challenges in the new age group and classroom. Hope it all works out for you!

i am from niagara falls canada so it is a little cold to go outside now and I dont drive but in my parents have a van and we all go out for supper at the mall once every couple of weeks and in the summer we are outside alot ( in the shade of course)

    • ANSWER:
Ummm ... it all sounds great but what about outings? Or do you live somewhere too cold (at the moment) to go outside?

Kids need to get out and about, to see new things, meet new people and experience their world.

When you think about it, everything's new to little ones so even the stuff that's boring for us is interesting for them - a trip to the shops, a play in the park, a walk around the block, a trip on the bus, a visit to the library ... the list is endless.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, don't rush. Take it slowly so you can talk to the people you meet, examine the letter boxes, the flowers in the gardens, the ants on the footpath ....

Talk about it all with your kids. This is much more useful and interesting for them than 'baby can read' videos and flashcards and it will have the same - or a better - result.

I'd also add lots more stories. Kids need to be read to every day, lot and lots of stories.

I've just answered a question where I said almost the same thing but it's important so I'll repeat it here. It's long so I apologise in advance!

There is absolutely concrete proof that kids who are read to have better vocabularies, learn to read easily and naturally, excel at school and grow up to love reading ....

      http://www.best-books-for-kids.com/impor…

Choose great books, read for at least 10 minutes every day and, above all, make it fun.

If you need help choosing some great books, start with this list:

      http://www.best-books-for-kids.com/books…

It's really, really important that you don't actually try to teach your daughter to read. This is just a stressful exercise and you risk turning her off books and reading for life. Just HAVE FUN reading together.

      Now, the alphabet and phonics.

There is so much wrong information out there about these. By all means teach your daughter the letters of the alphabet if you like but the SOUNDS the letters make are the important thing.

Teaching kids the names of the letters without talking about the sounds they make can actually do more harm than good.

Reading poems and rhymes and playing word games with your children is absolutely vital because it helps kids develop something called 'phonological awareness' which is crucial for learning to read ....

      http://www.best-books-for-kids.com/poems…

There is loads of proof that this works. I'm just a Mum but it's worked for my kids and I've seen it work for lots of other children too. I've also seen many kids who were not read to go on to have problems at school.

Look at what the experts say:

i really like the small kid but i hate the mentally retarted one!
i dont want to give away my stuff at any cost
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Wow. That's something tuff to explain but i'll try to. You know I really appreciate your honesty. It's not always easy to express oneself like this, but if i can say something to you little sister, you should not hate somebody just because she is retarded and that she has a different way of thinking. You are 11 and for my part you are not too young to understand that. It is really not her fault if she is like this you know? You should try to see her like somebody you would really like to help and you will see things a new way. If she was in your place and you in her place, would she have reacted like this with you?? Love is the answer. You will see that this will greatly help you.

  13. QUESTION:
    Birthday party for two....??
I posted this Q a few days ago but I wanted to get some more answers.

I know I'm a little early but I like to plan WAY ahead or I will never remember everything. I have 2 little boys whose birthdays are 3 weeks apart from each other. I ALWAYS said I would never share their parties but times are hard & money is tight right now and I just don't have the money for 2 parties AND Christmas in a 4 week time frame. The only part that bums me the most is that this year is my youngest's 1st birthday. Riley's 1st birthday is November 26th & Tyler's 4th birthday is December 17th. I, unfortunately, have to have ONE party and I was just looking for some suggestions on ideas on where to have the party. I want it to be really nice since Tyler didn't get a real party last year because his baby brother was in the NICU (he was 8 weeks early). I did Chuck E Cheese for his 2nd birthday but it was so crowded and loud that I don't really want to do that again. I live in a mobile home so we can't have it at my house and outside isn't an option either because its *supposed* to be winter (in PA it will be 40 degrees one day and 65 degrees the next through Nov - Jan. )

Any ideas?? Also, what are some things I can do to cut down the cost of the overall party. Having food has to be an option, but any cheap ways to do it? Also, I think I should have them each have their own small cake and 1 sheet cake for the guests. Tyler is allergic to eggs so I have to make my own cake for him without eggs.

Also, I never had any games played at Tyler's party (he & all the other kids were too little) but they have grown up!! What kind of games could we play? Or maybe a craft to make or something?

Sorry this is soo long...any advice is greatly appreciated!!

    • ANSWER:
I shared parties with my brother because are birthdays were also 3 weeks apart. I still had a great time and so did my brother so I wouldn't worry about it. For a location I would ask a family member or a friend if it would be ok if you had the party at there house so you don't have to spend money on a place. If that isn't possible see about renting a hall for a few hours. For the food I would make it yourself. You could have a make your own taco bar and have a crock pot full of the meat and all the toppings in bowls and chips or pretzels. You could also do hot dogs or pizza. For the cakes I would make all three yourself because you will save a lot of money if you don't buy them already made. I would just make the boys cakes different so you don't get them mixed up. For games you could do pin the tail on the donkey, bean bag toss, and hot potato.(have the kids sit in a circle and have them pass a ball to music and when the music stops whoever is holding the ball is out.) You could also have them make party hats out of construction paper, crayons, stickers, etc.

the pooh bedding is for our 7 month old and the other in for our 1 month old. what decorations should we put on the wall that will go with both? it is an apartment so it has to been something we can remove without damaging the walls. also should i put a rug that matches each set in front of the beds or just a plain rug in the middle? thanks. oh and the room is very small.
i asked in newborn and baby and one got one answer.
we have a rocker but i'm getting rid of it. it would be nice to use but it is on the bigger size and just won't fit.

    • ANSWER:
I think you should put some of each of the decorations - they are not that different from each other!!

Also, a larger rug in the middle in a solid color might work the best and go with everything better!

Do you have room for a rocker? That's always nice to have!!!

    • ANSWER:
they also have the character stick ups that go on the wall if they dont have them at target you could probably find them at a hardware store or somewhere they sell paint and wallpaper, they peel off easy, you could even find a small rug for the wall or you could find pictures and put them in frames around the room or even print of some colouring pages and colour them in and frame them

  16. QUESTION:
    Switching rooms at day care...experiences?
Asked over in N&B...still no answers.

Thanks so far! We were told when she started 5 months ago that they would begin to transition her when she started walking well. I would think by the time she is 15 months, she'll be in the next room only.
Thanks. These answers are all really helpful.

I'm far from keeping my daughter or myself in a bubble. What I'd like to avoid is another 2-day hospital stay for a stomach virus. Who knows, maybe she didn't get that bug from day care, it just seemed the most likely source. I *know* she's going to get sick, whether she attends day care or not. It just seemed her initial introduction to the facility brought much more illness than I expected, especially for a part-timer. Our pediatrician has told us over and over, it won't matter what day care we put her in: it'll all pretty much be the same experience.

    • ANSWER:
I used to work in a daycare and "taught" the newborn/babies and as my pregnancy progressed ended up in the toddler room for a while and then to te older ones. If they are going to do a transition time with her to get her used to it, it sounds like a good idea. She will learn much quicker and may even potty train faster because of that transition. The toddler room is a great place with the activities that go on in there. Obviously some things she not going to understand at first, but you'll start getting pictures that she colors and different projects that they do which are great for scrap books. as for the illnesses usually they are going to get more from the baby room than they are from the toddler room because the toddlers are typicially busier, they don;t spend most the day with their hands in their mouths and then on the toys and visa versa. Plus the toys don't go into their mouths as much either. This sounds horrible but in the toddler rooms they wash their hands more often just because of the snacks and the outside play time. Good Luck and hope this helps!
